7. Detached Chain Stitch

There are many places where Detatced Chain Stitch fit in on my ”Flowers of Paradise” fabric. I started with a few background stitches.image

Detached Chain Stitch is useful for various leaves and foliage. Here is one example. You can’t do without this stitch in flower motives.

image

And here are the well known little daisies. Eventually I will cover the black print with other stitches but this is how it looks right now.

And then another flower in progress.

image

This is how how I presented Detached Chain Stitch in TAST 2012:

”It is already week 7 and we will explore Detached Chain Stitch. Most obvious are floral motives, and I have seen a lot of them. Here are some of mine.”

image

”The only thing I made, that I havn´t seen before, is coaching with Detatched Chain Stitch.”

image

I also tried a few hearts. But what to call the stitch? Detatded Chain Stitch, Open Chain Stitch or Fly Stitch?

image

I learned the hearts from this tutorial.

Then I tried some more coaching:

6. Chevron stitch

I couldn’t find any suitable flower or a leaf for Chevron Stitch on my ”Paradise Flowers” print at first, so I made to two rows in the selvedge with threads drawn from the edge of the fabric.

But later on I tried these leaves.

Here are previous samples of Chevron Stitch on denim swatches.

… and a top with Chevron Stitch and French Knots around the neckline.

Updated: During TAST 2018 i made new attempts at a couple of floral motives.

5. Herringbone stitch

It is already week 5 of TAST, Take a stitch Tuesdy. Here is all you need to come along. This week we learn Herringbone Stitch.

Now some of my paradise flowers are embellished with the stitch.

Here are previous samples on denim:

I started by fastening a piece of lace with small Herringbone Stitch, and then I decorated Satin Stitch with Herringbone Stitch on top.

I made a few petals, but the stitches were too long. Therefore I coached them down with Back Stitch.

Then a doodle swatch with Herringbone Stitch mixed with French Knots.

Finally I made a flower with Herringbone and Buttonhole Stitch in the centre.

4. Cretan stitch

Cretan Stitch was a new stitch to me when i first encountered TAST. Here is my first attempt.

I also tried Cretan Stitch on denim.

image

This week i realise that Cretan Stitch is suitable for petals and leaves. Here is my ”Flowers of Paradise” cloth again with Cretan Stitch added to some leaves and flowers.

3. Feather Stitch

Feather Stitch is a beautiful stitch. I should use it more often. Here they are on a Crazy quilt.

There are not many flowers on my new ”Flowers of Paradise” cloth suitable for Feather Stitch. I did only a few leaves and I am not very pleased with the result.

image

So I worked som background stitches instead, whith threads drawn from the edge of the fabric, just to add some texture.

2. Buttonhole stitch and Blanket stitch

To me, Buttonhole stitch and Blanket stitch are two different stitches. Buttonhole is the stitch I use when sewing buttonholes by hand. It has a little knot at the edge. The stitch introduced this week I call Blanket stitch, used for edges. In my samples i use both.

Both variants  are very useful stitches. I have used them for decoration, lacemaking and constructing a bowl

Above you can also see my first attempt to make lace with Buttonhole Stitch, (the white flower). Bellow is my second attempt using the same pattern with a few alterations.

The bowl bellow is made from ordinary string, covered with left over from rug weaving sewn together with Buttonhole stitch.

And here are two kinds of Blanket Stitch on a Crazy Quilt.

This week I found a fabric called ”Flowers of Paradise”. I have started filling the flowers with with Fly stitch, Buttonhole stitch and Blanket stitch.

TAST-take a stitch Tuesday igen

imageI tisdags startade TAST, Take A Stitch Tuesday, på nytt.
