Running Stitch and Back Stitch were the first stitches I learned at school when I was seven years old. After all these years I realise that this stitch is The King among stitches. You can use it in many different ways. You will find it in traditional techniques, such as Sashiko, Kantha and hand Quilting.

This week I tried Running Stitch as a filling stitch.

Couching is not a stitch but rather a method  or technique. You can use whatever stitch you like to Couch down almost anything. It’s much fun and there are very few limits.

On my ”Paradise Flower” cloth I started by couching down little bits of tangeled threads, cut off when fastening threads on the back side of the embroidery. The flower is then surrounded by an outline of Chain stitch.

Then I tried various ways of couching as you can see in the pictures below.

Bokhara couching

Roman couching
Couching with Cross stitches.

Applique fastened with couched edges. I used small pieces of sweatshirt fabric.

During my embroidery class at HV-School, we did couching inspired by autumn leaves.

1. Tangled flax thread on denim.

2. Couched leaves on knitting, all in wool with plant dyed yarn.

3. And finally a small swatch with goldwork embroidery.

Chain Stitch is fine for lines, but also for fillings. I worked both this week.

The flower above has many different stitches, Herringbone, Fly and Detached Chain Stitch. This week I added Chain Stitch.

Above is a flower with Chain Stitch only.

Leaves with three rows of Chain Stitch.

I like the combination of Chain Stitch and Back Stitch as in the stem. The little leaves are two  Detached Chain Stitches.

Then a felted ball, with Chain, Buttonhole and Herringbone Stitch.

… and a denim swatch with different threads; Herringbone, Fly, Back Stitch and French Knots.

There are many places where Detatced Chain Stitch fit in on my ”Flowers of Paradise” fabric. I started with a few background stitches.

Detached Chain Stitch is useful for various leaves and foliage. Here is one example. You can’t do without this stitch in flower motives.

And here are the well known little daisies. Eventually I will cover the black print with other stitches but this is how it looks right now.

This is how how I presented Detached Chain Stitch in TAST 2012:

”It is already week 7 and we will explore Detached Chain Stitch. Most obvious are floral motives, and I have seen a lot of them. Here are some of mine.”

”The only thing I made, that I havn´t seen before, is coaching with Detatched Chain Stitch.”

I also tried a few hearts. But what to call the stitch? Detatded Chain Stitch, Open Chain Stitch or Fly Stitch?

I couldn’t find any suitable flower or a leaf for Chevron Stitch on my ”Paradise Flowers” print at first, so I made to two rows in the selvedge with threads drawn from the edge of the fabric.

But later on I tried these leaves.

Updated: During TAST 2018 i made new attempts at a couple of floral motives.

It is already week 5 of TAST, Take a stitch Tuesdy. Here is all you need to come along. This week we learn Herringbone Stitch.

Now some of my paradise flowers are embellished with the stitch.

Here are previous samples on denim:

I started by fastening a piece of lace with small Herringbone Stitch, and then I decorated Satin Stitch with Herringbone Stitch on top.

I made a few petals, but the stitches were too long. Therefore I coached them down with Back Stitch.

Then a doodle swatch with Herringbone Stitch mixed with French Knots.

Finally I made a flower with Herringbone and Buttonhole Stitch in the centre.
